ABOUT NORM STEIN, LCSW
I have been providing counseling services to people in the Hampton Roads area since 1993. I specialize in helping people with PTSD, anxiety, grief, depression, low self esteem, and survivors of sexual assault/molestation regain control of their lives. During my career I have helped hundreds of people eliminate their nightmares, guilt, anxiety, depression and feelings of worthlessness and move forward to experience satisfying and fulfilling lives. Most current treatment approaches to psychological trauma and PTSD define success simply as "a reduction in symptoms." My goal, however, is to ELIMINATE trauma symptoms, and I'm generally able to accomplish this in 10-15 counseling sessions.
My experience includes five years at Naval Station Norfolk's Fleet and Family Services Center (FFSC), where I specialized in trauma counseling for service members and their families. I've also worked extensively with public safety personnel (police, fire fighters and EMTs) and am certified in Virginia as a Critical Incident Stress Debriefer (CISD). In addition to my counseling private practice, I've worked in a variety of settings, including an Employee Assistance Program and a community mental health program, so I'm familiar with other resources available in our area.
Counseling Approach
For treating most types of trauma I utilize Eye Movement Desensitization Reintegration (EMDR) which is a well-researched technique that is recognized as one of the most effective approaches for treating PTSD. I have been a Level II Certified (highest certification) EMDR therapist since 2000. I'm also trained in Cognitive Processing Therapy, Solution Focused Brief Therapy, Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, and Strategic Therapy, and I incorporate complimentary aspects of these approaches in my counseling work.
